The Tuckahoe Creek floodplain is hundreds of acres and home to a variety of native insects, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. It is a perfect place for school children to spot an owl, blue heron, snapping turtle, or box turtle. With the right access students would access the part of the Tuckahoe Creek Trail that houses hundreds of years of history including remnants of the Gayton Coal Mines like coal pits, embankments, and relic structures. Part of which was set aside as a designated historic area by West Creek Development.
They can walk the route of the Tuckahoe & James River Railroad that carried coal in mule-drawn cars down to a landing on the Kanawha Canal throughout the 1800’s.
They can walk the the route of Dahlgren’s Raid. As his Union troops made their way through Goochland, they crossed into Henrico at Woodward’s Bridge over the Tuckahoe Creek before destroying mine equipment and moving into Richmond for a failed attempt at assassinating Jeff Davis.
